Howard County, Maryland

The Aging in Place initiative provides senior citizens of Howard County, Maryland specific, coordinated services that allow them to remain living in their homes throughout their lifetime. Central to this initiative is the belief that older adults are a vital force in the community and that their civic involvement enriches the quality of life for all citizens. The only free health clinic in Howard County, the Health Alliance for Patients in Need operates with volunteer doctors, nurses, and interpreters that provide needed medical help to uninsured citizens. Working in donated space, all patients are helped or referred to specialists, laboratories and surgeons free of charge. Run solely by students, the Wild Times Café was formed as a safe gathering place for teens by a nonprofit organization, Project Teen-Safe, Inc. The Café offers an alternative to drugs, alcohol, and crime by promoting a positive image for youth, providing a location for numerous indoor activities, and focusing on student talent.
