Ocean City, Maryland
The Children's House by the Sea was created to benefit
the quality of life for children suffering from life-threatening illness in
Ocean City, Maryland. It is the first pediatric beach respite center in the
nation. The Maryland Coastal Bays Program works to protect
and restore coastal bays in the area. Recognizing that the health of the local
economy is intimately linked to the health of the beaches and bays, residents
and the city have focused energy and money on restoring this environment.
"Play It Safe" targets youth who visit, vacation and live
in Ocean City. Over 220 volunteers provide alcohol-free events during the
month of June. The Police Department educates youth and alcohol retailers
to protect youth who experience the peer pressure of alcohol consumption,
drug experimentation, and risk-taking behavior.
