Independence, Missouri
The "Better Streets and Parks" initiative resulted in voter
approval of a sales tax that would support street and park improvement for
Independence, Missouri. Citywide collaborative efforts have identified numerous
projects and improvements that will be funded by this tax. The Midtown/Truman
Corridor, which includes the historic Harry S. Truman district, is
the revitalization of 72 blocks of the older core of the city. The project
is administered by a volunteer board, and is overseen and monitored by a 12-member
committee made up of residents. More than 70 percent of older homes in the
corridor have been renovated or converted into usable retail property. The
William Chrisman High School A.C.E. (Association for Chrisman
Excellence) is a volunteer club of over 300 high school students designed
to inspire excellence through the belief that volunteering is a life skill
that allows individuals to give back to their community and the world. Students
are able to receive a school letter after providing 40 hours of volunteer
service to the community.
