Burke Mission Station houses six major service organizations under one accessible, affordable and spacious roof in Morganton, North Carolina. The station is conveniently located downtown to serve those in need more effectively. The focus of the Burke County Public Library Expansion/Renovation Project was to renovate the 1935 library building to accommodate more comfortable and useable working space for patrons. The program continued after renovation to acquire expanded resources and support a new reading program for young adults. Burk Alternatives to Suspension targets at-risk students who have been suspended for three to 10 days. The program combines community service with successful completion of schoolwork in a structured environment that changes students’ feelings of self-worth resulting in more positive behavior in school and in the community.
