Greater Syracuse, New York

The Neighborhood Leadership Program of Greater Syracuse, New York is a grassroots approach to develop neighborhood pride and address neighborhood issues. Each neighborhood sends two representatives to an annual 12-week training program emphasizing group process skills, motivation techniques, and grant writing. At the end of each training program, $13,000 is allocated by those attending to support select community-based projects. Forging Our Community’s United Strength (F.O.C.U.S) is a community-wide visioning project. After gathering ideas from residents, 87 goals were translated and presented at a “Vision Fair” where they were prioritized through public citizen voting. The Greater Syracuse University Literacy Corps stems from President Clinton’s America Reads Challenge that urged community members to become involved in mentoring and tutoring young children. Over 120 students from the University now participate at over 20 sites.
