Anchorage, Alaska

Whether as a competitor, spectator, volunteer or family member, the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games Alaska brought out the best of humanity in Anchorage by providing a model on how all people perceived the cold and dark and how the citizens responded to winter. Bridge Builders of Anchorage is a community-wide grassroots initiative that promotes harmony and friendship among diverse peoples and to educate the community about the traditions, values and belief systems of the many cultures that live side-by-side, to develop the cognitive and interpersonal skills that enable individuals to increase their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities. The Anchorage Youth Court (AYC) is a non-profit alternative court in which students, who want to make a difference in the community and develop valuable skills, volunteer as judges, attorneys, clerks and bailiffs representing and sentencing their peers who commit real misdemeanor offenses.
